Social Problems Are Design Problems: What You Need to Know About SPDP 2021

“What is the future of design for a world in crisis?”

How can good design solve the problems that Filipinos face today? This is what the virtual conference Social Problems Are Design Problems (or SPDP) looks into. In their 2021 run on October 8 and 9, 2021, audiences get to tune into lectures and interactive workshops that explore the link between design and effective social systems. (Passes to the two-day event are available here.)

Indeed, social problems are design problems. As we learned at last year’s event, design is more than aesthetic; it’s a powerful tool that can shape the way we think and live, whether looking at pressing concerns on the personal or national level. It can even communicate empathy.

Presented to the public once again by local design studio And A Half, SPDP 2021 asks: What is the future of design for a world in crisis?

Over the coming weekend, speakers and panelists are slated to look into a very viable answer to this: Regeneration through Circular Design Strategies. “The pandemic and the looming threat of the climate crisis have laid bare the gaping holes in the world that we’ve built,” And A Half expounded in an Instagram post. “We need to realize that solving the problems of today needs total and long-term solutions. We need to shift towards interventions and policies which are not only sustainable but regenerative.”

On Day 1, October 8, And A Half hosts its lecture series, Regeneration through Circular Design Strategies, featuring Carlo Delantar of Altum, Keiji Ashizawa and Kay Concengco of Ishinomaki Lab and Lamana PH, Bert Peeters of Philippine Permaculture Association and Toff de Venecia of ACCIB.

On Day 2, October 9, participants can choose one of two immersive workshops: The Food Sovereignty Workshop with Slowfood Sari-Sari’s Mabi David and Tey Lopez and the Better Cities Workshop with the Head of Transport for Pasig City, Anthony Siy.

The two-day pass to SPDP 2021 is priced at ₱850 and is available for purchase here. This grants you access to all events on Day 1 and Day 2 including the following: eligibility for the raffles and giveaways, entry to micro-events on Gather.Town (which highlights DJ sets, live art and more), the post-event video replay feature, a chance to join And A Half on Discord and Miro, an e-certificate for participation and partner discounts.
